Christmas Lights

Mark McAdowI’ve always loved Christmas lights. For many years I helped my Dad put lights up on the house until it became my solo job. One of my favorite Christmas memories as a child was driving around town and seeing the “rich people’s light displays” in the expensive neighborhoods. Some were truly beautiful; others rather gaudy (aka Clark Griswold). We saw a few nice displays after visiting the Boys Town Ranch Drive Thru Nativity last weekend. I had to “negotiate” with my neighbors not to turn their lights on before Thanksgiving evening – the traditional night of lighting up houses for Christmas. They were gracious enough to comply, so I wouldn’t feel so bad for not having my lights up earlier!

This Friday evening begins the “Festival of Lights” better known as Hanukkah, which actually means “dedication.” According to tradition, the lights remind us of a miracle that occurred in the 2nd century BC when The Maccabees –Jewish warriors who recaptured Jerusalem from the Syrian ruler Antiochus who had defiled the temple; rededicated it.. According to legend, they only had enough sanctified oil to relight the Temple menorah for one day, but the miracle was it lasted for eight days. Today nine- branch candelabra called a Menorah or Hanukkiah is lit every night of the eight day festival, utilizing a ninth candle called the Shamash or servant candle to light the others.

There are several parallels to The Feast of Tabernacles and Hanukkah, both which involved marvelous light. It was during the Feast that Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12) and weeks later during Hanukkah that He announced, “I and my Father are one.” (John 10:30). Jesus would later say to his followers, “You are the light of the world.” (Matt. 5:14). Christmas is a great time to reflect the light of Jesus in your words, attitudes and generosity. Whether you light a menorah or put lights on your house, in your apartment or to decorate a Christmas tree; “let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matt 5:16).

Have a Blessed Advent Season celebrating Christ’s first arrival and anticipating His next! Looking forward to being with you this Sunday!

Yours for a Brighter World!
Mark
