Though the Bible speaks of the dangers of selfish pride; there is
a pride in others that is a blessing. We have wonderful volunteer workers at our Front desk who give freely of their time to assist your First Church Staff in our mission together – “To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Special “Thanks” to Tammy, Mary, Shelley, Ruth, Jan, Martie, Linda and our youngest recruits, Lauren and Beth! Ruth sent me this message that I thought was too good not to share:
I had an interesting phone call from a woman who introduced herself as Judy Warren. She said that her car broke down on 4th and Walker one day earlier that week. She said Katy Soper stopped and helped her get the car out of the road, then drove her, first, to pick up her daughter at work and, then, home around SW 74th.(Katy’s family live just north of downtown) The lady was so pleasantly surprised that someone who didn’t know her would help her this way. (Of course she doesn’t know Katy Soper!) She wanted to be sure that Katy was recognized for her assistance in a time of need. She said that she attends a different church closer to her home, but she was a very high opinion of First Church thanks to the action of one of our members. Way to go Katy!
We’re proud of you for representing the Lord and First Church so well. I am reminded of ll Cor. 5:20 “We are ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” We literally represent Jesus in this world. We’re called to be faithful disciples.
Tony will be teaching our students this concept over the next five weeks – be sure your student is here every week! I’ll be teaching a truly life-changing course beginning in September called “Becoming a Contagious Christian.’ If you want to make a real difference for Christ in this world- you won’t want to miss this “hands on” course in sharing your faith.
I also want to thank all the people who came out last Saturday – a very hot Saturday –
to help Carl and Sue Ketola move into their new home. Thanks to Dale, Gene, Steve, Hardy, Tammy, Emma, Jake, Gary, Robin and Hannah. “Many hands do make light-er work!” First Church’s strength is our faithful members who care for one another inside the family and out!
By the way, this Saturday August 6 has been designated as a Day of Prayer and Fasting in America called by Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. The American Family Association is sponsoring the event at Reliant Stadium in Houston from 10:00 - 5:00CST. You can watch live at www.afa.net but you must register in advance. Please be in prayer for our nation especially this Saturday. Last evening’s All Church Prayer Gathering with our students was a wonderful time in the Lord. Great to baptize Todd and welcome four new members last Sunday as well! God is good.
Yours in Christ’s Love,
Pastor Mark
