The Longest Month

What is the longest month? This year is a leap year; so we know February gets an extra day; but it’s not the longest month. We also know that “30 days has September, April, June and November” but they can’t beat January, March, May, July, August, September, October, and December with their 31 days!

What’s the longest month? I suggest for those who entered into a 21 day fast beginning last Sunday that January may well be the longest month of the year! Time sure seems to be slowing down for me; as I’ve given up “meats and sweets” like Daniel and also caffeine. Today I’d like to dedicate my thoughts to fasting. A spiritual discipline far too few Christians practice including me.

I have gone on 3 day solid food fasts a few times in my walk with Christ and I have gone on partial fasts during Lent for most of my life; but never this type of a Daniel Fast ever! I know friends who have and found great benefit, but I guess I never wanted to deny myself to that extent. There is a real battle between our flesh and our spirit and too often I give in to the flesh. What about you? Some of you reading this right now have already dismissed even the thought of fasting; others are about to click off now. But, for those who continue I pray you will be challenged and blessed!

I want to hear from you who are fasting during this time! What are you experiencing this week? What are you discovering –beyond long days? Let’s learn from each other and encourage each other. I wrote in my journal these thoughts so far:

“Lord, Thanks for the challenge and resolve to fast for these 21 days. It is “disrupting” my routine and causing me to deny my flesh –I like to begin my mornings with a cup of hot tea, I like to have a Coke at lunch and sometimes at dinner and I enjoy my desserts –even savoring my breath mints; but I’ve given those, plus meats up these days. I suffered a mild headache the first evening and second day, but they went away by the third day (Great things often occur on the “third day” don’t they?). The days are certainly longer, so fasting does slow one down and I’m beginning to get some extra time with You. My energy level is good and I was able to run yesterday without too much difficulty. My taste buds are being renewed, as I ate a Gala apple and it tasted really sweet! I seem to be losing a few pounds as well –a benefit though not my focus. Thanks Lord for the benefits I’m already experiencing. “

Pastor Jentezen Franklin who has led his church to fast in January for the last 12 years says, “Fasting and prayer bring you closer to God.” And if you have lost your spiritual edge, “Then declare a fast and pray. God wants to supernaturally change you.” Have you lost your edge? Why not seek God today and ask Him if it’s time to do something “different” in your walk with Him. Maybe it’s time to declare a fast. You can begin any day and reap the blessings of a closer walk with Christ in 2012(If you have medical issues, please consult your doctor first as well). Blessings!

Your Pastor and fellow pilgrim on the journey,

Pastor Mark

PS – This Wednesday January 18 we begin our new six week study, “When God Speaks” by Henry Blackaby. This is an excellent time to listen to God’s voice, as we prepare for our Spiritual Life Weekend March 2-4, 2012. Come join us as we seek Christ together as The First Church Family!

Day 5 of the Daniel Fast . . . I didn't think this fast would be as hard as it is, since we aren’t deprived of food – just restricted in our choices. And yet, my Flesh still craves what it cannot have. Darn! Especially tonight -- family movie night -- and the kids are having our traditional Friday-night meal -- PIZZA. Broccoli and mushrooms don’t sound nearly as good as a slice of sausage pizza. But,when I call on Him, God is FAITHFUL! I’m standing on 2 Cor. 12:9 . . . “He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Hello, broccoli!

Pastor Mark - Thank you for your help in brining this forward to our church. My wife and i are following the Daniel Fast fully as it is described. I had a hard time with getting rid of the caffeine, and the meats and sweets. However, I was surprised how good I feel and that has allowed me to study more. (I actually read and worked the study guide for Wednesday)

It is said to not draw attention to your fasting and try to seek pity for the fasting as it would only draw attention to the individual and not help worshiping God. The way that you are presenting the Fast is actually helping lead us forward. There is another church that is also participating in the fast. They also are not asking for pity on the individuals. That church is handling it just as First Church. Talking about the fast as a global part of the community, and not brining attention to any one single individual.

Do not feel pity for me or those who feel led to participate, rather lets be thankful for a forgiving and wonderful God. Let him use all of those to help glorify our Lord.

Well it’s been a little over a week now and I am actually feeling good and with more energy it seems! I am just a little bored with the food, although, I have been amazed how good whole wheat products taste! My wife even has me eating oatmeal every day which is just unheard of in my past!

Thank you for leading our Church through this Fast. I was consuming way too many snacks, sweets, and other things which are just not good for your body. I was eating for the enjoyment of my body and not enjoying the wonderful tastes of the foods God has blessed us with. It is amazing how sweet natural fruits are! I am finding that I am now reaching out to God in various times during the day now as the rumblings within my body remind me of this through-out the day. :o) I actually feel more alert and have a different perspective on tasks in my day and relationships with those around me.

Missing a Nicks burger but growing closer to Christ!

Amazing sermon Sunday, Pastor Mark. Thanks for reminding us that this Fast isn't about food, or the lack of food, or losing weight. It is about Surrender . . . about Surrender to Him whom we desire to reign as Lord of our Lives. This quote was in Oswald Chamber's "My Utmost for His Highest" on January 8, the official first day of the Fast: "God nowhere tells us to give up things for the sake of giving them up. He tells us to give them up for the sake of the only thing worth having -- life with Himself." As our Pastor, you've encouraged us in this new year to raise the bar in our personal lives and everyday choices. This fast isn't easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is.

Such a miracle the clarity of focus you get during a fast. The physical things that we are experiencing as a Church body during the fast, God is showing us the parallel for in the spiritual life. The truth is I have cheated a couple times this week, but all I feel is His grace, not His condemnation. This may have to become an annual thing for our Church Family.
