What's Missing

Pastor Jim Cymbala in his book, ‘You Were Made For More” challenges Christians to consider the unique ministry God has called each of us to. As we’ve noted in our study of The book of James we’re called to put our faith into action! Ephesians 2:8-10 reminds us that “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which he prepared in advance for us to do.” What has God prepared for you to do? Have you asked Him lately? Are you doing it cheerfully? “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”(I Corinthians 16:10).

We have often assume we need more “me time” to be truly happy and refreshed. And though I certainly advocate time away to be refreshed and daily time with the Lord; sometimes we fail to realize work was God’s idea from the very beginning! It actually came before “The Fall.”

Pastor Cymbala writes, “Muscle tone is developed and energy is created not by doing nothing, but by doing something. This principle holds true in the spiritual realm as well. It is why so many Christians lack the fulfillment and strength God wants them to have. They have not yet found their personal work assignment in God’s overall plan, which was conceived by him long before they even became Christians. Their days and weeks lack a sense of individual purpose and drive. We all know believers who live with a gnawing lack of fulfillment. Something is definitely missing.

They often try to fill the void by buying a new book or CD from a Christian personality. They may switch versions of the Bible. They may wonder about changing churches. All of these temporarily distract them without getting to the heart of the matter. The key to filling their emptiness is to discover and then carry out their work assignment from the Lord. God has called every single Christian to do something special, something mighty, something unique that only he or she can do. God knows your personality. He is the source of all your gifts and strengths. He also knows your great potential to advance his kingdom.”

Jesus said “I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly.”(John 10:10) Are you experiencing the abundant life? How are you serving the Lord?

We have several ministry opportunities right here at First Church! Our new Volunteer Ministry Coordinator Tammy Patton would be glad to hear from you. What is God calling you to do? Whiz Kids tutor? Greeter? Homeless breakfast volunteer? Prayer Team member? Front desk volunteer receptionist? Sunday School teacher? Student Ministry sponsor? Small Group leader? We have a place for you!

See you this Sunday!
Yours In Christ’s Love,
Mark

I completely agree! I have never felt more spiritually alive than the times I have been doing something God has prepared for me to do. Whether singing on praise team or teaching childen in Children's Church, it doesn't matter. It feels as if a spigot opened up and the flow has been restored from God through me. I highly recommend volunteering, especially in a place not quite so close to your comfort zone. You never know what God might do through you!
