The Art of Neighboring - Taking Time To Love

When our kids were young we loved to watch VeggieTales. These animated vegetables told Biblical stories in such wonderful ways. The first episode I ever watched was titled “Are You My Neighbor?” It was a retelling of the parable of the Good Samaritan. One of the songs we sung often at our house was sung by the Mayor of Flibber-o-loo and the Doctor of Flibbian as they saw the poor soul who had been beaten and left alone alongside the road. The words of the song are “We're busy, busy, dreadfully busy! You've no idea what we have to do. Busy, busy, shockingly busy! Much, much too busy for you! 'Cause we're busy, busy, dreadfully busy! More than a bumble bee more than an ant! Busy, busy, horribly busy! We'd love to help, but we can't!”

We sang the song around our household in jest, but in reality, it rings true in my own life today. I’m simply too busy to help others, to be a good neighbor to others. I mean I have Twitter and Facebook to check, Netflix and Hulu to watch. I have my own life to take care of. I certainly don’t have time to get to know my neighbors.

But our struggle with busyness isn’t new. It’s something that has plagued humanity since the beginning. Even Jesus was tempted by being too busy, but He always chose relationships over busyness. Time and again He stopped and ministered to those in need, even when He was in a hurry.

This Sunday at First Church we will be examining some practical ways we can make time for loving our neighbors. We will look at reprioritizing our time, our motivation for loving our neighbors, and how to shift from viewing our neighbors as bothersome annoyances to viewing them as children of God. I hope to see each of you in worship this Sunday at 10:45 am at First Church as we continue our latest sermon series on “The Art of Neighboring.”

What a time it is in the life of the children at First Church! We just got back from taking seven kids to Growin’ in Grace camp at Canyon Camp. They had a blast worshiping, playing games, swimming, learning new songs, bonding with their small groups and so much more. We talked about our roots and the people and things in our life that help keep us grounded and help us in our faith journey. We also talked about wings and our unique gifts that help us grow in our faith. The kids absolutely loved it and cannot wait to go back! For my fifth graders I am sad to see to see them go but I know they will have so much fun next year at youth camp! And for my kids that get to go next year… get ready for an incredible time! Camp holds a special place in my heart because it is where I accepted my calling into ministry. It is such a privilege to now be able to lead kids at camp as we grow closer to God. Big things happen at camp and I am so excited for the next camp season! Kendal Willis

At the beginning of this month, we took three girls to Journey Camp in Tahlequah! They had a blast in worship, community time, and their small groups. They hiked up a steep trail to a beautiful natural overlook, and then they descended into the murky depths of the mud pit— I’m sure they’re still finding mud in between their toes! The theme of this year’s camp was Engage. They learned about engaging their faiths, and how a relationship with God goes much deeper than what we could ever imagine. They learned about how important it is to consistently engage with God and to be open to His will in their lives. Through fellowship, worship, and a whole bunch of fun, these girls left camp with a heart full of Jesus and a challenge to seek God harder than ever before. We also brought Kendal Willis, our new children’s director, who was excited to be our female leader this year. Now, we’re gearing up for Journey 2020! If you are interested in camp, please email rkennedy@firstchurchokc.com . Onward to next year! Ridge Kennedy
