The Art of Neighboring - The Power of Invitation

When I was in college, I struggled finding a church. I tried the big United Methodist Church in town, but it was just so foreign to my rural, small church background. It was a massive sanctuary and the pastor wore a robe. Although I had grown up in the United Methodist Church, I had never seen a pastor wear a robe. In hindsight I suspect it wasn’t the robe, but the person wearing the robe that rubbed me the wrong way. So I tried all the Baptist churches in town with my roommate who was a lifelong Baptist. I bet I tried over a dozen churches. I drifted from church to church until a coworker named Sandy told me about her church. She said it was relaxed, but there was a passion about their worship. She told me their preacher delivered a solid Biblical sermon and that the church had a loving atmosphere. She even told me she would meet me there the next Sunday. I spent the remainder of my college years in that church.

It’s amazing what a personal invitation will do. Although fewer people are attending church in America today and much has been written about the secularization of our country, still 82% of those considered “unchurched” are at least somewhat likely to attend a local church if a friend invited them. That’s pretty amazing when you think about it. 82% of those who do not attend church would attend if someone they knew invited them. But the sad part is that seven out of 10 unchurched people have never been invited to a church in their whole lives. That tells me we have neighbors and coworkers and family members who are simply waiting for someone to invite them to church.

This Sunday at First Church we will be concluding our series entitled “The Art of Neighboring” as we examine the “Power of Invitation.” We will look at the core reasons for inviting others to church, some practical steps to inviting someone, and how inviting a person to church can possibly change their life for eternity. Make sure you join us this Sunday for the conclusion of this extremely important sermon series. I hope to see each of you in worship this Sunday at OKC First Church!

What a time it is in the life of the children at First Church! We just got back from taking seven kids to Growin’ in Grace camp at Canyon Camp. They had a blast worshiping, playing games, swimming, learning new songs, bonding with their small groups and so much more. We talked about our roots and the people and things in our life that help keep us grounded and help us in our faith journey. We also talked about wings and our unique gifts that help us grow in our faith. The kids absolutely loved it and cannot wait to go back! For my fifth graders I am sad to see to see them go but I know they will have so much fun next year at youth camp! And for my kids that get to go next year… get ready for an incredible time! Camp holds a special place in my heart because it is where I accepted my calling into ministry. It is such a privilege to now be able to lead kids at camp as we grow closer to God. Big things happen at camp and I am so excited for the next camp season! Kendal Willis

At the beginning of this month, we took three girls to Journey Camp in Tahlequah! They had a blast in worship, community time, and their small groups. They hiked up a steep trail to a beautiful natural overlook, and then they descended into the murky depths of the mud pit— I’m sure they’re still finding mud in between their toes! The theme of this year’s camp was Engage. They learned about engaging their faiths, and how a relationship with God goes much deeper than what we could ever imagine. They learned about how important it is to consistently engage with God and to be open to His will in their lives. Through fellowship, worship, and a whole bunch of fun, these girls left camp with a heart full of Jesus and a challenge to seek God harder than ever before. We also brought Kendal Willis, our new children’s director, who was excited to be our female leader this year. Now, we’re gearing up for Journey 2020! If you are interested in camp, please email rkennedy@firstchurchokc.com . Onward to next year! Ridge Kennedy
