Faith Promise - Pleading for the Chance to Give

I was scared to death when I was a young boy that God would call me to be a missionary. In fact, that fear stuck with me into my teen years. Even though I was an extremely involved leader in our youth group I stayed home when our youth group went on a weekend mission trip to Dallas. I didn’t want anything to do with being a missionary. Needless to say, God has changed my heart over the years. In fact, mission work, both domestic and international, is one of my great joys in life.

First Church has always been passionate about mission work. Even as far back as the 1930s we were actively involved in supporting overseas missions. First Church has always been a church that understands the global nature of Christianity and for the past number of years we have used “Faith Promise” as our primary means of supporting missionaries around the world. You will hear more about “Faith Promise” the next two Sundays and how this approach to financially supporting missions has transformed our global outreach at First Church.

This Sunday we are kicking off “Missions Week” at First Church. We will begin this Sunday morning from 8:30 am to 10:30 am by packaging food through Stamp Out Starvation. Make sure you show up before 8:30 am so we can package as much food as possible. You can find out more about Stamp Out Starvation on their website, https://www.stampoutstarvation.com.

On Wednesday evening we will have a great evening of fellowship, celebration, and food with a barbecue cook-off, a dessert auction, and a presentation from one of the missionaries we support. During the barbecue cook-off and dessert auction you will have the chance to vote for your favorite barbecue by giving a financial donation or bidding for your favorite desert. All the proceeds from the evening will go to support our missions program at First Church.

I look forward to seeing each of you in worship this Sunday as we kick of Mission Week at OKC First Church!

What a time it is in the life of the children at First Church! We just got back from taking seven kids to Growin’ in Grace camp at Canyon Camp. They had a blast worshiping, playing games, swimming, learning new songs, bonding with their small groups and so much more. We talked about our roots and the people and things in our life that help keep us grounded and help us in our faith journey. We also talked about wings and our unique gifts that help us grow in our faith. The kids absolutely loved it and cannot wait to go back! For my fifth graders I am sad to see to see them go but I know they will have so much fun next year at youth camp! And for my kids that get to go next year… get ready for an incredible time! Camp holds a special place in my heart because it is where I accepted my calling into ministry. It is such a privilege to now be able to lead kids at camp as we grow closer to God. Big things happen at camp and I am so excited for the next camp season! Kendal Willis

At the beginning of this month, we took three girls to Journey Camp in Tahlequah! They had a blast in worship, community time, and their small groups. They hiked up a steep trail to a beautiful natural overlook, and then they descended into the murky depths of the mud pit— I’m sure they’re still finding mud in between their toes! The theme of this year’s camp was Engage. They learned about engaging their faiths, and how a relationship with God goes much deeper than what we could ever imagine. They learned about how important it is to consistently engage with God and to be open to His will in their lives. Through fellowship, worship, and a whole bunch of fun, these girls left camp with a heart full of Jesus and a challenge to seek God harder than ever before. We also brought Kendal Willis, our new children’s director, who was excited to be our female leader this year. Now, we’re gearing up for Journey 2020! If you are interested in camp, please email rkennedy@firstchurchokc.com . Onward to next year! Ridge Kennedy
