The First Songs of Christmas: Ave Maria
The Advent and Christmas seasons are my favorite time of the year. I love everything about the season, especially the songs. Last year during Advent I preached a series on my favorite carols of Christmas. This year, we will be examining the first carols of Christmas. Now, they were not called "carols" at that time, they were simply songs sung by different characters in the birth narratives found in the Bible. These first songs of Christmas are overlooked by many of us, or at least by us protestants. From Mary's first song of praise, "My soul magnifies the Lord," to the angelic choir proclaiming "Glory to God in the highest," these first songs of Christmas teach us important lessons that Jesus would later proclaim and live out. These songs teach us about the child that would be born in a manger, worshiped by lowly shepherds and Magi from the East, and prophesied about by the young, the old, and the angelic.
Our worship services during this season of Advent will take on a different feel and emphasis. These more traditional worship experiences will be designed to touch all your senses, remind you of the great stories of the Christmas season, and challenge you to move beyond nostalgia into action and service during this season.
I look forward to seeing you and greeting each one of you at 10:45 this Sunday morning as we celebrate "The First Songs of Christmas" at OKC First Church.
